Are your lips too thick or too full? Are your lips too thin or is the red part of the lips too narrow? Is your upper lip begun to droop? If your gums are exposed because your upper lip is lifted too high when you smile? A cosmetic procedure or plastic surgery may be able to help make your lips more beautiful and give you more self-confidence.
Soft, voluptuous and symmetrical lips are associated not only with youth and vitality but with sensuality. As you age, the skin loses elasticity, the muscles lose tone and fatty tissues in the face lose volume. These natural changes cause lengthening and sagging of upper lip, drooping of the corners of the mouth and poorly defined lip curvatures. The lower teeth, rather than upper teeth, show when the lips are slightly parted. Lines, folds and wrinkles gradually become visible, which can be very noticeable around the mouth and lips. Furrows in the nasolabial folds as well as deep "marionette lines" give a person a down turned and sad appearance.
Lip enhancement or lip augmentation creates fuller, plumper lips, restores symmetry when necessary, and can reduce unsightly wrinkles around the mouth and other age-related lip features, such as deepened folds along the cheek borders, drooping at the corners of the mouth, or small vertical "smokers" lines.
These days, dermal filler is the most commonly used method of lip augmentation. There are many types of dermal fillers that can be injected in your lips and around your mouth. But the most commonly used fillers are "hyaluronic acid fillers." Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. Collagen, once the most common dermal filler, is used less often today. The newer options are safer and the effects last longer.
Fat injections, dermal graft and implants are other methods to augment lips. But they aren't used as much today because the results vary and there is a greater risk of side effects.
Lip augmentation can give a marked improvement in your appearance but its effective and safe use requires thorough understanding of facial anatomy and appropriate choice of filler.
Lip correction is a quick, in-office procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation. You can go home on the same day of your surgery & resume the normal activities right away. Initially there will be mild swelling or bruising, temporary redness or an “over-filled” appearance to the treated area. It takes 1-2 weeks to resolve the swelling completely. The results are reasonably long-lasting, but not permanent. You may need a top-up to maintain the volume. If you choose not to repeat the treatment, your appearance will return to its original condition. But the result of Fat injection or Dermis will be lifelong.
Oversized bulky lips and double lip deformity can be corrected to achieve aesthetically pleasing size and shape by lip reduction technique. This outpatient surgical procedure involves removing a strip of skin and extra bulk of tissue from one or both of the lips. Sutures are removed or dissolve on their own between 6 -10 days post surgery. Down time involves bruising, and swelling. Your swelling will subside within a few weeks, but usually the final result will be visible after about 3 months of the surgical procedure. Scar is invisible.
As we age, our upper lip begins to droop and flatten and the red part of the lips becomes narrower. A lip lift surgery shortens the distance between the upper lip margin and base of the nose creating upper lip fullness by rotating the lip upward and outward. It also enhances the curvature and appearance of the upper lip vermilion, thus making the lips appear more plump and youthful. The plastic surgeon usually makes a small butterfly-shaped incision. The scar is placed in the natural shadow crease between the nostril and the lip and is virtually undetectable. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes about half an hour. The procedure is more useful in patients with thin upper lips and it gives a happier look to the mouth. Sutures are removed after a week and the incision is usually invisible.
Your smile should be one of the most attractive things about you. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some people have excessive amounts of their gums showing when they smile. This is known as a "gummy smile." Cosmetically acceptable smiles show a gingival display of up to 3 mm. Gingival display of greater than 3 mm results in a gummy smile which is often unsightly for the individual and correction is sought. People with this issue feel their smile to be unattractive and often avoid social situations that may involve laughing or they might avoid family photos, or at least feel self conscious about smiling in photos.
There are several causes of a Gummy Smile. One of these is an overactive muscle of the upper lip, and doesn't involve the gums or teeth at all. This can be easily corrected.
An over-developed elevation muscle can be weakened with a few injections of Botox in the elevator muscles of the upper lip. The amount of Botox units you need depends on the strength of the muscle. Generally 10 units of Botox are sufficient. This will prevent the upper lip from raising excessively high when you smile. The full results are seen after several days. At that time, you upper lip will not raise as high, revealing only your beautiful smile. This means that your gums are less exposed when you smile. Your natural facial expressions remain unaltered. This is a quick, virtually pain less procedure done in Lavanya office. The effects are fairly long lasting, usually requiring two or three treatments every year depending on the individual patient. Additionally, asymmetrical or irregular smile can also be corrected.
For the right patient, this simple, quick procedure can make a world of difference in self esteem and attitude.
The plastic surgeon weakens the elevation muscle of the upper lip (myotomy) between the gums and the upper lip. This procedure is performed with a local anesthetic and last about an hour. The incision is made in the mouth so that the scar is invisible. Any swelling and bruising generally disappears within about two weeks. Sensory disturbance may occur. The movements of the corners of the mouth remain intact for a beautiful and natural smile. A myotomy operation gives permanent results.
